Who is Chris Sutherland?
Chris Sutherland is the founder of Decanting Veritas Ltd., a Scotland-based wine importing and education company focused on bringing distinctive small-producer wines to the UK market.
Originally trained as a cybersecurity professional, Chris spent many years working with complex technical systems before turning his attention to wine. The same analytical mindset now informs his work in the wine world: identifying patterns, cutting through unnecessary complexity, and helping people understand wine in a practical and approachable way.
Chris is the author of If You Like This Wine… You’ll Probably Like…, a consumer wine guide built around the idea that discovering wine should be intuitive rather than intimidating. The book helps readers explore wine through style and similarity rather than technical memorisation, encouraging drinkers to trust their palate and confidently discover new bottles.
Whether writing, teaching, or sourcing wines, Chris approaches wine as something meant to be shared: a bridge between growers and drinkers, and between curiosity and discovery.
Alongside writing, Chris is actively involved in wine education and the trade. He assists with the delivery of WSET Level 1 and Level 2 courses in Scotland and is currently completing the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines. His broader study includes specialist programmes in Champagne, Valpolicella, Burgundy, and the Langhe.
Through Decanting Veritas, Chris works directly with independent European wine makers, with a particular interest in small family owned wineries whose voices are often under-represented in export markets. His goal is simple: to help thoughtful small winemakers reach drinkers in Scotland and across the UK, while giving consumers access to authentic wines that reflect place, people, and tradition.
